Someone bailed last minute, 8 million shorts dont cover last 20 minutes, your probably right wrt to insider info spurring the late trades, these outfits have reps in cars and bars, enticing working folks to divulge for a few hundred. They will not broad cast this as they dont want share price to increase when they are trying to cover.
End of day market orders can also cause an affect like this, but consider the triple witching and knowledge that GDXJ would probably buy, would provide oppotunity on both sides of trade. This was an anomaly, going forward all that matters is that RNX has some share price stickiness, that means that gains cannot keep dribbling away. I`m quite sure that Paul Huet know what has to be done, just waiting for perfect sequence of news.
