Thanks, Hudsonq1234, for finding that disertation.  Adding foam to the steam injection may be another promising way to get the bitumen out.  A heterogenous steam chamber sounds like STP.  I have only perused the abstract and introduction, but it sounds promising.  The dissertaion was written in 2009.  As will be seen from the quote below, foaming the steam at that time
