It's getting more and more difficult for even the pols to argue against climate change. With the number of people being affected by "unusual" weather conditions; the balance is quickly shifting against dirty energy. Elections will generally focus a politician's priorities (getting re-elected!). I don't know the particulars of the generating plants, but generally speaking converting to NG is not too difficult and, emissions aside, many U.S. plants change back and forth based on the cost of energy input cost. Alberta & northern BC have pretty large reserves of NG so supply/cost shouldn't be a major impediment.
