the only thing I know is that it is not because a virus mutate that it will become more letal.
It's often the opposite : new mutants emerge all the time. The select ones which are able to spread more easily between hosts will become the prevalent variants. More often than not, these new strauns are actually less letal than the original virus. That's why popular viruses are still with us a few millions of years after the first humans emerged on earth : rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, etc.
by the way there are at least 50 strains of adenovirus.
