Apple probably thought people would be on their side. They likely thought lots of people would turn out at their stores to protest too.
Apple has miscalculated imo.
More than half of Americans think they should unlock this ONE device which is all the FBI is asking for. Apple has tried to turn it into the FBI wanting a back door.
If over half of the public want Apple to comply with the FBI, you have to assume that these people are also Apple consumers. Apple may lose sales over this issue and I think it is backfiring on them.
Chen has stated many times that terrorists and criminals don't deserve encryption.
He has also said that Blackberry can and has turned over the encryption key to specific devices in the past when the FBI etc., have had court orders. They've been able to do this without jeopardizing other Blackberry devices too.
Apple is making a huge mistake and I think this will be something that haunts them for a long time as it will cost them sales.
