. The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that the Canadian executive who won a David-and-Goliath fight over patent infringement with Google last week says he hopes his victory will inspire more technology upstarts to invest in intellectual property. The Post's Bianca Bharti quotes Patrick Spence, chief executive officer of California-based Sonos Inc., saying: "To take on one of the world's most powerful companies and be able to win just shows you that we were well prepared, we are the true inventor of the category and the system worked. If you're in an area that's really interesting in this day and age, it's almost certain that big tech giants are going to want to come into it. No one could stop them from doing that, but if they're going to do it, they shouldn't be able to trample on everything that you've invented." Mr. Spence made his name at BlackBerry before joining Sonos in 2012 as chief commercial officer. Last week, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) upheld a preliminary ruling that Google's smart speakers infringed on five Sonos patents, concluding a legal saga that began in January, 2020, when Mr. Spence decided to pick a fight with a company that dwarfs the one he has run since 2017.
