China Re-innovates BBD Technology

China Re-innovates BBD TechnologyBack when Bombardier entered China we wondered how safe it was to do business with the Chinese.

Seems our suspicions weren't unfounded. As suspected, the Chinese hold out the prospect of doing business with them as bait. Once they get the technology, they try to tweak it to make it look different and then go out proudly selling it to other countries.

A recent article in the Wall St Journal indicates the Chinese have stolen rail technology from Bombardier, Siemens, Kawasaki, and Alstom. With a few changes they now call it "Chinese Innovation".

Bombardier representatives claim they have agreements with the Chinese on all of their contracts. It's hard to believe Bombardier, and others might not be a little naive in their rush.

And why would western companies trust the Chinese with their latest technologies? The simple answer is they were in too big a rush to outdo competitors. They felt if they refrained from doing business with the Chinese, they'd simply get it from the others.

Most expected the Chinese rail industry to take a lot longer to reach the stage where it would compete with themselves on an international scale. But that's already happening with Chinese rail companies now working on projects in Turkey and Brazil.

So, now the Chinese have both the technology and they control the lowest cost labour.
