TORONTO (Dow Jones)--Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) has named Sunil Kashyap as global capital-markets regional head for the Asia-Pacific Region.
In the newly created role, Kashyap will oversee Scotia Capital's activities in the region while continuing his current responsibilities as the Asian head of ScotiaMocatta, Scotia's precious-metals unit, and foreign exchange, according to an internal memo reviewed by Dow Jones.
His appointment follows the launch of the new Global Wholesale Banking initiative, which focuses on coordinating Scotia Capital's wholesale-banking activities across geographies.
"An important mandate of the GWM initiative is to support revenue growth in our wholesale activities globally, of which Asia-pacific is an area of continued focus," according to the memo.
Kashyap will report to Mike Durland, group head of global capital markets and co-chief executive at Scotia Capital; and to Barry Wainstein, global head of foreign exchange and precious metals.
Kashyap joined the Canadian bank in Asia in 1997 as part of Scotia Capital's acquisition of Mocatta Bullion. He became head of ScotiaMocatta in 2001 and has been instrumental in setting up the bank's bullion business in several Asian countries. He has also been closely involved with the liberalization process of the Indian, Chinese, and Middle East buillion market, according to the memo.
Previously, Kashyap worked for eight years with an international financial-services institution in India and in Dubai.
