Baytex Energy Corp. is a Canada-based energy company. The Company is engaged in the acquisition, development and production of crude oil and natural gas in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and in the Eagle Ford in the United States. Its crude oil and natural gas operations are organized into three main operating areas: Light Oil USA (Eagle Ford), Light Oil Canada (Pembina Duvernay / Viking) and Heavy Oil Canada (Peace River / Peavine / Lloydminster). Its Eagle Ford assets are located in the core of the liquids-rich Eagle Ford shale in South Texas. The Eagle Ford shale covers approximately 162,000 net acres of crude oil operations. Its Viking assets are located in the Dodsland area in southwest Saskatchewan and in the Esther area of southeastern Alberta. It also holds 100% working interest land position in the East Duvernay resource play in central Alberta.

BTE short position can to be a trading short P.

The great volume of 22.5 shares is close to 3 times the average volume. Nice gain of 8.92 % for the day. No big block trades and crosses. Strong institutional buying programs and HFT.

Few oil stocks created 52 weeks high. BTE is getting close to the previous high of $6.63. It has a big float of 564m shares. It needs mega volume to move the share price. Now that the stock is trading at a higher price it can list on the US exchange. That would generate additional volume directly from the US and would be easier for US investors. They have assets in the US too.

I regularly look at the short position of BTE to see if there is any serious short covering. This stock was trading at around $.40 in 2020 and the short position was over 30m. Oil prices had collapsed and some institutions were adding shorts to most oil stocks. But now the oil is over $100 and BTE is a cash cow why these short selling is still holding such are large position. The market trend has changed, now institutional investors are rotating into oil stocks. So why there is still such a large short position on BTE. Some would say 3.56 % is not big and normal. It is actually good for the stock because short sellers have to buy over 20m shares to cover their position.

HFTs are very active in BTE. It has a great average volume and it is a good stock to milk for short spreads and at times they control the range. I think some of these short positions are rotating short positions. Where HFT try to cover at a lower price and then creates new a short at a higher price. That way their shorting price would be much closer to the trading price of the stock and manage their exposure. In 2018 the short position use to be around 8m shares. I don't think that short-sellers would hold a losing short position for multiple years.
