Although
I'm late to the conversation, but as one poster commented "we get the gov't we deserve" IMHO is an unfair representation of the whole of thecountry...
The last 2 elections the conservatives have had the majority of the popular vote but have not been elected... how can it truely be a "democracy" when the "popular" vote isn't recognized as the leader.
And that goes to the US as well with their electoral college skewing the popular vote..!

It is frustrating moemoney but it all comes down to how districts are represented . When Toronto and Quebec combined have 40% of all available seats in parliament , it gives very little voice for the rest of the country . Canada's system is biased to eastern rule , there is no regional representation and that's why the west always gets screwed .

Agreed.. that's what is wrong with "districts" and the gerrymangering that goes on.. it should be based on popular vote at the federal level... period..!

True in regard to the electoral college....but the real point is Canada does not have a geographically representative Senate like the U.S. with its two senators for each state. Canada's senate is likewise over represented by eastern provinces and the west is under represented in the number of senators.

I believe the value of a vote is lowest in Ontario, meaning the province has the highest number of voters per seat. The other two underrepresented provinces are BC and Alberta.

Well you answered your own question. It's only a democracy when it is convenient for the powers that be. we don't really live in a democracy but I guess it's as close to one as we are going to get.
