Frank, Yeah my friend Anne lives in White Rock. Another in South Surrey. Both have EVs. Great for running around in but they'd never risk going to Kelowna in them. My brother lives in Kelowna. He's got a hybrid. When he goes to Vancouver he uses gasoline. All fear being stuck in the mountians in winter with just EV.  Talking with my brother he thinks natural gas through fuel cell is ...more

kevin are you spreading more false information. i know people that make the trip from vancouver to calgary on a regular basis, summer and winter time. it is not a problem anymore plenty of fast charge stations along they way could even go coast to coast. EV,s are available in AWD if you are scared of winter driving. most have over 400km range, (battery technology is getting better all the time ...more

Ok Duster point taken. I'm going by third party anecdotal info. So EVs can go through Rogers Pass at minus 30 no problem and recharge anywhere along the way. So what's all this talk that I read that the battery goes dead at temperatures below freezing. Yeah they have battery heaters but what good are they if you run out of charge and can't recharge? Interesting times Duster. The big ...more

What's all this talk you're hearing about lithium batteries going dead at temps below freezing? It's called a number of things. Some people call it bullshit, I call it misinformation by the misinformed. You can discharge your lithium battery at temperatures below freezing, even without a heater. See the thing is, that when electrons flow, they create heat. So discharging, especially ...more

All good, solid points InAtTheTop. OK we've distilled this down to reliability. What's the worse case? You're in the bush in Kakwa country near Grande Prairie, Alberta with lots of steep hills. It's minus 35 C. Which would you rather have? A Dodge Ram with a 6.7 litre Cummins diesel or an EV truck. Both have the torque to chug up the hills. In fact the EV has constant high torque ...more

So, a battery heater would certainly be able to dynamically keep the battery at the optimum temperature for discharging at the current rate required based on the demand at the moment. That's really not that difficult. The downside is that it further discharges the battery but then that is where optimization comes in. Computers are wonderful things. On a side note, back in 2008 I was working ...more
