My brother lives in Kelowna. He's got a hybrid. When he goes to Vancouver he uses gasoline. All fear being stuck in the mountians in winter with just EV.
Talking with my brother he thinks natural gas through fuel cell is the way to go. 60% efficient in that 60% of the internal chemical energy of natural gas is converted to the power that turn your wheels. Hydrogen through fuel cells is even better at 90% efficiency. Internal combustion (IC) is maybe 30% efficient. We don't see IC lasting much longer. Too much of a waste of energy. Also EVs have 10% of the moving parts that ICs do. Less to go wrong.
But battery powered EVs gotta be the worst. Not only is the electricity delivered from fossil fuel fired generating stations only 30% of the chemical energy that was used to produce them (Rankine Cycle) you also have transmission line losses and losses in your vehicle itself. So where are you at? Maybe 20% efficient. What a waste of energy! Battery powered EV owners sure love to pollute our planet!
kevin are you spreading more false information. i know people that make the trip from vancouver to calgary on a regular basis, summer and winter time. it is not a problem anymore plenty of fast charge stations along they way could even go coast to coast. EV,s are available in AWD if you are scared of winter driving. most have over 400km range, (battery technology is getting better all the time). kelowna to vancouver is 390km. long term scenario is EV's will have a major effect on BTE and the entire oil industry they already are having a huge effect.
