We will probably never find out the reason for the rift!
I assume he was fired!

Would make sense. I personally wonder what he has been doing during his work days the past year. If he was focused on negotiating about a new joint venture, that didn't seem to work out so well as there have been no news. Many other companies in the innovation space are moving much, much faster. I hope with a new CEO, Burcon will become a company that moves fast.
