There may be multiple reasons for the lower price level. What is also strange is that the Patriot is forecasting the same price for 2012. I assume that they have hedged the price in a longer term contract and are unable to participate in price improvements.
The quality of the metcoal is maybe also be a reason for a lower contract price. I have tried to find information if the company has wash plants at it's various locations in Kentucky and Virginia and can find no such reference. I presume they are shipping raw coal which trades at a larger discount.
