As for buying banks, you must be a glutton for punishment and are making sure you can't "take it with you" as you won't have any left... 

I think you've got it exactly backwards in your investing philosophy.  I'd be selling GM and financials and buying commodity plays, not vice versa.  Inflation is coming due to massive stimulus spending; the Greenback has to eventually reflect horrific fundamentals once the "safe haven" fear based buying recedes.  Both issues are strongly bullish for commodities, regardless what the world economy is doing.  But add in a rebounding economy (stoked by all the deficit spending), you'll get a double incentive to be long commodities, especially oil producers.
