Consider how 4DX Success is actuially good news for D-BoxI don't worry about the success of 4DX. In fact, I welcome it. I believe it will lead to more D-Box seats both in home theatres and in out of home theatres. Here's why...
First let's consider out of home theatres. Yes, 4DX may excite more senses (motion, smell, wind, rain, lightening) but it is an expensive upfront investment and it likely also costs alot to keep all those chemical and water sprayers full, clean and unclogged etc... electical costs to run the wind puffers and strobe light flashes are probably significant too. In other words, Most theatre chains will likely limit their investment to one 4DX auditorium in only their flagship multiplex locations. All this really does is "Raise the Bar" for what movie goers will begin to expect from their out of home theatre experience. The way I see it this helps D-Box because the plethora of non-4DX (yet still premium large format) auditoriums, will begin to seem dull and boring if they don't at least offer D-Box motion seating in every seat. In my view, motion seating is clearly on its way to becoming "Table Stakes" in the premium theatre game. Much like multi-channel surround sound, Large high resolution screens, 3D, and brighter high contrast laser projectors already have.
Now let's consider the home theatre market. I doubt even the most affluent home theatre owners are going to want to pollute their home theatres with all that extra messy stuff spraying around. I can only imagine how much those different smell refill canisters are going to cost (even on Amazon) and of course the canister design standards would change regularily forcing the poor home theatre consumer to buy special expensive adapters for the new canisters etc... And really, how many movies will stream via netflix as 4DX enhanced? On the other hand, D-Box seats will increasingly become a relatively inexpensive and low maintenance way to add impressive pizazz and pinache to the home theatre.
Just my thoughts. Go D-BOX!!
