Starter Batteries using lithium/ graphite

excerpts:

At 80 million cars per year, the legacy auto industry alone could soak up the output of an entire Gigafactory by switching to Li-ion starter batteries.* If trucks and other starter applications are included, 2 Gigafactories will be needed to meet demand. This will provide the volume to continue the relentless downward cost trend of batteries and storage.

*Car batteries have about 1 kWh of storage. 1 million auto batteries therefore have 1 billion kWh of storage or 1 GWh. 80 million autos therefore require 80 GWh of storage capacity or 150% of the Gigafactory’s output.

We really live in interesting times.  I know the last thing anyone should do is count their eggs, but I really think diversified energy is coming in force.  It will be interesting to see how many oil companies close as a result.  Small producers who don't get bought or join into a conglomerate will close. Yep.  I hope they aren't going back to the ways that got us into this mess in the first place.  Back then, the big payoff was always near, and so they (McKinnon and Schler) took personal advantage of it to an extreme.  I think the big payoff is very near once again.  I hope that current management behaves more admirably. A decent sign is that managment put US$155k of ...more

I lost tract of A123 Systems after assuming they were finished. Then further reading of the original link i posted I found this https://www.hybridcars.com/a123-shifts-away-from-ev-battery-packs-in-us/   After they went belly up, the Chinese Firm Wanxiang Group took them over and has been employing A123 System's technology.   In the subject link, Forcier said A123 System& ...more

It's possible that Forcier made that comment about US and European markets because of the shapes of the economies.  It's looking more and more like there is a day of reckoning coming soon with automobile debt in the US.  Forcier is probably also thinking that emerging markets will be a bigger source of revenue.  Right or wrong, that's what I take away from his comments.  ...more

StoogeNo4... Agree that the major global economies haven't been looking good, especially for the gas mobile, but EV's are not in the same boat, especially when one considers the need for commodities such as graphite and electrical grade vanadium to pave the way for the new technologies.   It's interesting that Wanxiang Group took over A123 Systems and Karma Automotive which ...more
