a bit older news, but....Fortune Minerals found better economic opportunities in Saskatchewan than in Manitoba Mar 18 Posted by prosperitysaskatchewan . Press Release March 18, 2014 For Immediate Release NDP Policies Chase Jobs Away Metal Refinery to be built in Saskatchewan because of poor economic policies in Manitoba: Cullen The NDP has lost 100 metal refinery jobs because Fortune Minerals found better economic opportunities in Saskatchewan than in Manitoba. “Manitoba could have earned a $230-million metal refinery by simply showing Fortune Minerals this province is open for business,” Mineral Resources Critic Cliff Cullen said. “Instead, the jobs and economic development resulting from the industrial facility will go to Saskatchewan.” Both Flin Flon and Brandon were considered by Fortune Minerals as potential sites for this facility. However, an NDP government spokesman said in a media report: “We were unable to match the Saskatchewan tax credits due to our existing tax structure for mineral refining.” The Saskatchewan government found a way to do what the NDP couldn’t, and as a result, Langham, Sask., will get the jobs instead of Flin Flon or Brandon. In addition to the construction jobs associated with building a $230-million facility, the Manitoba economy lost $9 million per year in employment income from those 100 jobs, as well as spinoff benefits to other economic sectors such as suppliers and service providers. After 15 years in office, the NDP’s poor business climate and economic policy continues to chase away major employers who could have set up businesses in Manitoba. For example, a canola crushing plant was built by James Richardson International in Yorkton, Sask., instead of in Brandon.
