Tomorrow is the worst day to sell.  The value goes down by about 21 cents,  but the selling price will go down much more.  So wait a week or two.

Thank you all! Sold a portion this morning at yesterday's close of 7.77 so avoided a large drop..

At no point was FTN $7.77 yesterday. Yesterday's close was $7.90 with a high of $7.94 and a low of $7.82.  And FWIW there was no real "large" drop today.  GL

Correction.  I sold At 7.76 today.  Regardless of yesterday's close .  My Qtrade shows Wednesday close at 7.77..  correct there was no large drop Thursday.

On our webbroker the stock did go down that low, as they deduct the distribution on ex divvy date. SO it automatically opened 12 cents lower than the close the previous day.

Right. But it didn't close @ $7.77 on the 27th, nor did it go that low on that date. This is what Stockwatch shows the last 3 days:::    2023-29-12  T FTN 7.77 7.80 7.72 7.80 -0.03 154,899 830 7.78 7.80 77,487 14,904 14,316 7,000 2,954 14,100 18,604 3,350   2023-12-28 T FTN 7.81 7.84 7.65 7.83 -0.07 255,358 953 7.76 7.83 108,663 20,704 38,300 15,100 1,927 27,300 ...more

As you said, tomorrow is ex-dividend, which means you must have bought before tomorrow to get the divy. Buying tomorrow means you do not get the January dividend but as someone else mentioned, the price usually drops on the ex-dividend date, quite often more than the value of the dividend.
