As an analogy, basically, the NYSE is to the OTC (pink sheets), what Toronto is to The Vancouver exchange. NYSE & TOR are considered much more respectable I guess might be the word. In the U.S. some full service brokerage firms will not allow a client to purchase many foreign stocks whose symbol ends in F (pink or gray sheet stocks). That would include many foreign mining stocks. There are exceptions. The NYSE and the NASDAQ have greater listing criteria and provide a more liquid market than the exchanges that cater to more speculative issues such as penny stocks. Also, you are not dealing with very thinly traded stocks that often have huge spreads.
