I've been in a few software/tech startups.

 

When the first idea isn't making any money you find another target to go after... and if you have enough time you keep on looking.

 

Additionally, something startups often do is underestimate how long it takes to get an income.  Hey, if you have some good ideas... start out on a dime and get several paying customers... then it's a cakewake.  Going the other way around hoping to find customers after building something is harder to maintain if the sales don't take off.
