No withholding tax

Just received my Jan distribution in full.

I found with RBC that the withholding deduction would be applied a week or two later.   To see, I had to go back and search the log for everything to do with HOT.UN.

Checking my past activity in my waterhouse account I do not see any retraction of funds post distributions for HOT. I will monitor this latest one to see if anything changes. Still, this is a screaming buy in the $2 range (even $3 range) even if withholding taxes are applied. The travel sector is getting some love again. My CHR shares are hugely in the green and that is without any distribution ...more

Perhaps the payment had to be above a threshhold for the withholding to apply or maybe RBC was wrong to withhold, as I had filled out a W-8BEN-E.  I tried arguing with them to no avail.  They reckoned the withholding was lessened but not eliminated.  I've no idea what will happen going forward as I only just reentered and this will be my first payment.  Agree HOT.UN is a ...more

As with all investments, the future is unknown. I believe CHR is better positioned going forward. I have held it for over 10 years, was out of the stock briefly when covid began, but re-entered at a lower average and more shares.   CHR has always been led by the nose by AC, especially when that shark, Calin Rovinescu, was CEO at AC. I like their divesting plan into aircraft leasing with ...more

Currently, we have an inbalance here. Recall the quote "Markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent." While the stock is out of favour, it does not properly reflect the current underlying business. Travel is recovering, the payout ratio is conservative and well below 100%. No one ever made a lot of money buying at the top. Take advantage of a good business in a ...more

Iam new to HOT the monthly dist show up in US dollars or do the  brokers one is going through convert it? Thanks
Comment by flamingogold on Jan 26, 2023 2:33pm
My distribution is coverted into Canadian dollars. The amount I get changes each month depending on the exchange rate. Up to now, despite the concern expressed here in December, I have yet to see any withholding tax on the latest distribution or, for that matter, on any previous one since my first buy over 2 years ago.

To the best of my recollection, RBC withheld 15% and it had to be applied to each monthly payment separately because of the varying exchange rate.  For every payment entry in the log, there would come a withholding entry.  I have received my January payment, my first since reentering.  If no withholding entry appears in the log by the end of February, it's fairly safe to say ...more

Strange, I checked all my logs with TD going back to when I first bought in 2021 and did not find any withholding tax entries
Comment by pjn0987654321 on Jan 26, 2023 5:33pm
I held from 2015 to 2020.  Maybe a tax change policy came in after then, or RBC shouldn't have been withholding.  I tried arguing with them several times.  If they do withhold this time, I'll tell them that TD is not withholding.  Thanks.

Better yet... switch to TD and keep the withholding tax lol
Comment by bcsc on Jan 27, 2023 11:15am
It all depends on the account that it is held in. No withholding tax if held in RSP. In a TFSA or non-registered account withholding tax applies. To the best of my recollection: At one point TD was withholding 15% of the entire distribution. HOT then began to split the distribution into the various components and the withholding tax was only applied to the income portion of the distribution, not ...more

My shares are in a non-registered account. No withholding tax as far as I can see in my online account. I will have my accountant check TD's slips at tax time.

your tax slips will also show in your trading account for you to view also

To the best of my knowledge, no withholding tax on dividends applies if securities are purchased on the Toronto Stock Exchange, even though dividends are paid in USD!!
Comment by rabnud on Feb 17, 2023 1:54pm
there are zero witheld taxes
Comment by flamingogold on Feb 17, 2023 3:57pm
I concur... no withholding taxes here either. So, the big worry back in the Fall that depressed the stock price was overdone except the price is still depressed... until one day it isn't. Getting paid almost 9% to wait.
