comments on commentRather than reply individually, here’s my replies to some of the recent comments on my posts.

Fantome – Thanks on the estate ideas. I had read a bit about the insurance option but will look into it further.

Marketsense – thanks for the very nice comment. Our portfolio definitely isn’t for everyone but it sure works for us. It has a very narrow focus which can make putting additional money to work quite difficult. What I’ve been doing is sometimes just increasing our holdings in certain stocks. I group them into different levels based upon book value. I don’t believe in ever trimming so the current% is quite as important as the % of total book.

Sadie – very good point on the timing of the buying. We were quite fortunate to be transitioning to a dividend income/growth strategy in 2013 during the interest rate tantrum when dividend stocks really got spanked.

Since then, we have added quite a few more shares and entered some new positions (extra cash from divys, 5 take-overs, etc). I prefer a staged buying approach with 3-5 buys within 2-12 months to get to a full position. This helps remove some of the trying to time. I then use it as a win, no matter what. If the stock goes down, then I’m happy I didn’t buy all at once. If the stock goes up, then I’m happy I got in to start with. I totally agree with Fantome that if you are holding long term (and do the staged buying), then timing isn’t as important.

Red Deer - Thanks on the comment and I enjoy almost all your posts (still on the fence on your replies to “Seriously Stupid” as some are quite amusing but some just encourage the idiot and then he clutters up the board). Good one on my portfolio today vs Seriuosly. I am indeed up significantly - AQN, BEP.UN, and BIP.UN were certainly a few of my best buys and they have been on an amazing tear

I know we both have some common ones (at least PKI). I hear you on the capital gains problem. It sure is a tricky one.

Seriously Stupid - you're not worth commenting on.

All the best to all longs
