The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority (SWA) has released the first outlook for 2012 on the potential spring runoff for the province and according to its projections, the runoff will be normal or below normal in all parts of the province.
The prediction is based on soil conditions at freeze-up and the existing snowpack at the end of January,
In the agricultural areas, the SWA says there is a low potential for above average runoff.
This is due to the combination of a dry fall and below normal snowpack in all areas expect for the very northeast, which is near normal, and the southwest region, which is well below normal.
One area of the province that was hit hard by last year’s record flooding, the Souris River basin, is predicted to have near normal runoff and Nickel Lake is expected to fill and spill in 2012.
SWA also says the present snowpack conditions across the northern forest and in the north is also near normal.
The agency cautions the prediction is based on limited data and unfavourable weather conditions could result in a higher runoff.
