California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed legislation requiring all new school buses purchased or leased in the state to be zero-emission electric vehicles starting in 2035. California joins a growing number of states such as Connecticut, Maryland, Maine, and New York that have passed similar mandates aiming to transition school bus fleets to electric power.
GreenPower Motor Company Chairman & CEO Fraser Atkinson says states are increasingly embracing the federal push for electric school buses, including EPA funding opportunities. However, he notes some key challenges still need addressing as EV adoption spreads, citing potential challenges like colder climate performance and charging infrastructure.
"I think it's multi-faceted," Atkinson tells Yahoo Finance, commenting on his outlook on electric school buses, adding: "There's a lot of advocates that have helped propel the electrification of school buses."
