While people commonly buy a stock of a company because they want to invest in that company, there is no universal one-size-fits-all reason such as “a statement of no confidence” to sell a stock. There are many reasons other than “a statement of no confidence” for an investor to dispose of a stock, including (but not limited to) the following examples:
1) Timing objectives: Investors who sell when they reach their timing (short term, mid term, long term) objectives.
2) Financial objectives: Investors who sell when they reach their capital gain objectives.
3) Price Targets: Investors who sell when the sp reaches their pre-established price range.
4) Freeing up capital:Investors who love the company but need cash perhaps for an emergency? Divorce? Marriage? Retirement? Who knows?
5) Risk averse: Investors who want to preserve capital over the potential for a higher return. (e.g You buy 100 shares of company XYZ, and you sell a portion of your holdings to preserve your capital when the sp increases over time).
6) Tax reasons
