The export of jobs by US corporations began 15 years before Nixon was elected. It is due to cheap labour in countries with few laws to protect workers and their dependence on a subsitance level of living.
Unionised workers in the US WERE the middle class and with their destruction, the US is no longer able to operate a consumer society/economy. As with nthe policies of Thatcher & Reagan, everyone is forced to operate their own small business, as there will be fewer and lower pensions&benefits available for working people who are paid by the hour.
Little wonder they partied in the streets on the day the put Thatcher in the ground.
