CITY OF JERMUK DECLARES ECOLOGICAL AREA

CITY OF JERMUK DECLARES ECOLOGICAL AREA
CITY OF JERMUK DECLARES ECOLOGICAL AREA WITH PROHIBITION OF EXPLOITATION OF METAL MINES
On December 18, 2018, the Jermuk Municipal Council passed a resolution declaring the spa town ecological zone and prohibiting the exploitation of metal mines in the municipality.

This resolution came after a petition signed by 3000 inhabitants of Jermuk, addressed to the Armenian government as well as the communal council and the mayor of Jermuk. The signatories of the petition presented their economic vision on the development of their region and demanded the prohibition of any extraction of metals and the development of a green economy and respectful of the environment.

The signatories of the petition stressed in particular: "In approving the gold mining project in Amulsar, previous governments have violated our right to participate in the decision-making process. Until 2016, Jermuk was not recognized as a community affected by the Amulsar project. After 2016, when Jermuk was finally recognized as such, no public debate took place in Jermuk. The Lydian society (Editor's note: the company that operates the mine) and the old Armenian governments have ignored us. They tried to mislead us or intimidate us.
