ALERT B&C Corporation announces that it is in the final stagesof application development for an early warning instrument capable ofpreventing tragedies caused by biological contamination in the foodindustry
LAVAL, QC, Aug. 27 /CNW Telbec/ - ALERT B&C Corporation ("ALERT B&C" or
the "Corporation") (TSX Venture Exchange: ACB) announces today that it is in
the final stages of application development for their TRAKER(TM)-B series
which will be capable of operating as an early warning device to aide the food
industry in the prevention of tragedies caused by biological contamination.
ALERT B&C is a Canadian BioDefence Company specializing in the
development and manufacturing of Detection & Identification instruments for
Biological & Chemical agents. Initially oriented toward military activities
and counter-terrorism, the Corporation has expanded its activities to include
another critical area within the BioDefence field, civil protection and public
safety.
Since the Anthrax outbreak in 2001, there have been several other
incidents involving biological contaminants which have been detrimental to the
public. Just a few examples include contamination of patients by deadly
bacteria in hospitals, contamination of drinking water supplies by E-Coli,
contamination of tomatoes by Salmonella and most recently, contamination of
meat products by Listeria.
"Ensuring the purity of our basic necessities, air, food and water has
become equally as important to the protection of society as military defences.
The public is becoming extremely aware that these basic necessities are not
being protected and will demand compulsory detection solutions in the very

ALERT B&C's biological analyser (TRAKER(TM)-B) is able to rapidly detect
and identify potentially dangerous microorganisms such as those involved in
recent contamination incidents. This instrument can analyse samples in liquid,
solid or airborne forms, onsite, in less than two minutes and has sufficient
sensitivity to detect bacteria significantly below damageable levels. It will
be able to be used as an early warning device to prevent the types of
tragedies we have seen more frequently over the past decade. The Corporation
believes that deployment of these instruments will be a key factor in reducing
the occurrence of these events going forward, and securing the population
against illness caused by bacterial or chemical contamination.
The TRAKER(TM)-B is part of the TRAKER(TM) Line which consists of the
TRAKER(TM)-B (Biological Detection), TRAKER(TM)-C (Chemical Detection) and the
TRAKER(TM)-B&C (Dual Detection of Biological & Chemical). These Instruments
are compact, portable laboratories, which operate in the field providing
instantaneous identification and analysis of potential threats. The TRAKER(TM)
instruments are based on Mass Spectrometry and incorporate the Corporation's
proprietary Metastable Atom Bombardment "MAB" technology.
The MAB Source allows analytical work to be performed onsite which is a
non-accessible approach for other traditional ionisation techniques. Contrary
to conventional ionisation techniques that use high energies, MAB permits one
to precisely program the ionisation energy which creates significant noise
reduction and selectively targets the biological or chemical compound of
interest. The combination of these MAB features results in a clear mapping of
bio-organisms and chemical species. The process produces an identifiable
"fingerprint" of a given agent which can be matched against that of a
reference sample. Using MAB, active contamination can be effectively detected
orders of magnitude (a factor of 10 to 100 times) below damageable levels with
extremely small samples, thus making proactive and preventative measures
possible.
Although the applications of MAB Source in the field of detection are
somewhat endless, the Corporation is currently focusing on the food and water
industries, public buildings (hospitals, etc.), first responders, and the
military. Whether the incident is accidental or intentional (bio-terrorism)
the applications of MAB technology are uniformly effective.
