OT: Drinking Canada Dry.A Montana pipeline burst sent as much as 50,400 gallons of oil gushing into the Yellowstone River, prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency. Residents in nearby cities were told not to drink the tap water, which some said smelled like diesel. This isn't the first major oil spill into the Yellowstone River -- the longest undammed river in the United States. In 2011, up to 42,000 gallons poured out of a ruptured Exxon Mobil pipeline. https://www.cnn.com/2015/01/20/us/yellowstone-river-spill/ The Yellowstone? Are you kidding me? Fine, let's build another freakin' pipeline over our water supply, then we all can be drinking crude from Canada.
I remember standing on the edge of the tailings from a gold mine up by Golconda, and listening to a young Canadian geologist, who with a grin on his face and a sweep of his arm explained, "It's not like we're mining Yosemite Valley! Ha, ha, ha!" Apparently in his mind the Nevada Desert was just a waste land ... after all it didn't look a thing like Ontario!
The expectation that Canadians will respect our lands and waters is IMO unreasonable and contradicted by their record. The opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline has legitimate concerns.
