FP/wire say Northern tumbles on Anglo's Pebble exit

2013-09-17 08:33 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, Sept. 17, edition that Northern Dynasty Minerals took a dive Monday, shedding 79 cents to finish in Toronto at $1.54. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports the shares fell the most in 18 years after Anglo American PLC withdrew from a partnership to develop the Pebble copper project in Alaska. Northern Dynasty equity marked a 52-week intraday low of $1.36. Anglo announced its exit Monday. Anglo is reviewing its operations and said it is prioritizing capital for projects. Anglo will take a $300-million writedown on its interest in the project. The United States Environmental Protection Agency said last year that large-scale salmon habitats may be harmed by mining near Bristol Bay, Alaska, where Pebble is located. The deposit is estimated to hold 81 billion pounds of copper, 5.6 billion pounds of molybdenum and 107 million ounces of gold, according to Northern Dynasty's website. Pebble Limited Partnership was created to design, permit and run the mine. Pebble spokesman Mike Heatwole says the project remains important for Alaska, and officials will share additional information about the way forward for the project in the coming days and weeks, reports Bloomberg.
