The interest in continuing to explore the mining potential in the region is still present. At least in the southwestern area. So much so that the Orovalle mining firm , which currently exploits the resources of the Boins mine , located in Belmonte de Miranda , has managed to carry out the research project requested from the regional government to explore the presence of gold, silver and copper. in Tineo, Allande and Cangas del Narcea. The Mining Promotion, Development and Safety Service of the Principality of Asturias has given the green light to the research permit called 'Chugarn', which will be developed in 288 mining grids of extension.

As EL COMERCIO has learned, the work provided for in this research permit will be for initial recognition. This means carrying out geological mapping, geochemistry of rocks and soils "that would not generate any impact in the study area." Upon completion of these studies, the company will have the necessary information to determine whether the presence of gold, silver and copper could lead to a mining project in the area.

Allegations

This research permit is granted after having completed the required administrative procedures. On March 18, 2015, the application was definitively admitted, after which the public information period and the processing of allegations began, which were rejected.

In this sense, the Coordinadora Ecologista de Asturias did not hesitate to present its allegations to the project. The group indicates that it is "the largest area in recent years authorized for a mining project" and reiterates the environmental damage caused by this type of mining. "The Government allows new investigations without worrying about mortgaging those areas during the years of investigation for any other activity in the area and, at least, it will be three years," adds the spokesman for the group, Fructuoso Pontigo.

Other permissions

Orovalle's interest in expanding the study of the potential of gold, silver and copper mining in Asturias is not new. In June 2015, the Canadian company had been granted three research permits (Campalcarro, Quintana and Lidia).

At the end of October 2019, the Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias (BOPA) added in one month the publication of the definitive admission of three research permits in the region. They encompassed a total of 515 mining grids; that is, an area of more than 140 square kilometers.

The Orovalle firm employs half a thousand direct workers and more than a hundred indirect workers in its western operations.
