New tugs for Crowley

Filed from Houston 2/1/2008 11:00:09 PM GMT

Crowley 76-foot Avik class tugboat

USA/ALASKA: Crowley Maritime Corporation has awarded a contract to Diversified Marine for the construction of two new 76-foot (23 m) Avik class tugboats for use in Crowley's Alaskan oil transportation and distribution fleet. The tugs are expected for delivery in the first quarter of 2009.

The tugs, suited for shallow water and ocean towing operations, form part of Crowley's plan to modernize their Alaskan river operations fleet. One will be sent to Bristol Bay and the other to the Yukon River. The tugs will handle barges carrying fuel or regular cargo, delivering to communities without docking facilities.

Both tugs will feature raised bridges, electric tow winches and deck machinery, and fuel tanks surrounded by empty spaces to reduce the chance of fuel spills.

Keppel Nantong Shipyard.

CHINA:  Keppel Nantong Shipyard Co. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore's Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd. (Keppel O&M), secured three contracts worth approximately US$75.3 million, including owner-furnished equipment, to build eight tugs.

The first contract is with Smit Internationale Beheer B.V. to build two 90-tonne (99-ton) bollard pull offshore support tugs.  The tugs will have anchor handling, dive support and fire fighting capabilities.  Delivery of the vessels is expected in the first half of 2010.  They will be deployed off West Africa.

The second and third contracts were awarded by Keppel Smit Towage Pte Ltd. and Maju Maritime Pte Ltd.  Each contract is for the construction of three 65-tonne (72-ton) bollard pull twin-screw azimuth stern drive tugs.  The tugs will be built to the MTD 3265ST design, developed by Keppel O&M's technology unit, Marine Technology Development.  The vessels are expected to be delivered progressively during 2011.

Both Keppel Smit Towage and Maju Maritime are 51/49 joint ventures of Keppel O&M and Smit Internationale N.V., respectively.

Keppel Nantong, located about 110 kilometers (68 miles) northwest of Shanghai, China, and just under two years old, now has 26 vessels on its order book.
