I think this is the best policy when it comes to trolls, simply because people new to the board can suss them out instantly. But when it comes to shorts using misinformation to scare away those kicking the tires, I think the exact opposite is true. They need to be exposed for what they are, relentlessly, and the facts need to be reasserted, again and again.
Think of it this way: you know they're not trying to change YOUR mind because they know you know they're peddling misinformation. You are the obstacle. They're only interested in reaching those ignorant of the facts.
