Canada-Russia gas deal at risk

OTTAWA (AFP) — Canadian dealings with Russia, including a pact giving gas giant Gazprom access to North America's marketplace, are being reconsidered in light of Russia's foray into Georgia, Canada's prime minister said Tuesday.
"We're examining obviously all aspects of our relationship. We're obviously focusing on aspects that have to with the strategic and military situation, but we will of course review everything," Prime Minister Stephen Harper told a press conference, when pressed about the gas deal.
In May, Russia's Gazprom announced a deal with a Canadian-French consortium to ship liquefied natural gas (LNG) to eastern Canada via a terminal in its Quebec province.
Gazprom said in a statement it had signed a letter of intent with Gaz Metro, Enbridge and Gaz de France for a "major" stake in the proposed Rabaska LNG terminal in Levis, Quebec.
As well, the Russian firm contracted for 100 percent of Rabaska's import capacity, up to 500 cubic feet of LNG per day.
On August 8, Russia sent its tanks and troops to pro-Moscow South Ossetia in response to pro-Western Georgia's military offensive to take back the province, which broke away in the early 1990s after a separatist war.
Canada has since advised its citizens to evacuate Georgia, accused Russia of escalating hostilities in the former Soviet republic, and cancelled joint military exercises with Russia planned for this month.
