Even as Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, calls Google's growth 'insane', the current inner buzz is that Google is developing its own mobile phone...
Although Google will not comment directly, Head of Google's Iberian operations, Isabel Aguilera, has acknowledged that Google is 'investigating' developing a mobile phone that works both as an Internet access device and as a way to extend Internet use to emerging markets.
Another spokeswoman for Google, Erin Fors, however said, mobile is an important area for Google, and that they remain focused on creating applications, and establishing and growing partnerships with industry leaders to develop innovative services for users worldwide. But that they have nothing further to announce.
Meanwhile, the market is abuzz with talks of a Google phone...
A phone analyst with London-based Nomura, Richard Windsor, told clients last week that at a major European conference in Germany, an unspecified Google representative had confirmed the company is working on its own phone device.
Windsor penned a note titled 'Google Phone: From myth to reality', wherein he wrote that Google has come out of the closet at the CeBIT trade fair to admit it is working on a mobile phone of its own. The note described the phone as a mass market device aimed at bringing Google to users who don't have PCs.
Similarly, a venture capitalist with Boston-based Polaris Venture Partners, Simeon Simeonov, wrote in a blog posting on March 4 that an inside source close to Google had informed him the company is developing a Blackberry-like slick device.
The posting said the device would be able to handle voice over Internet phone calling, and that it is being developed by a 100-member mobile phone group at Google, which includes Andy Rubin, the creator of Sidekick.
Of course, speculation about Google products hasn't always proved right But then, it can't be denied that especially over the past one year, the company has been branching out into a whole lot of things beyond Web search...
All said, Finnish major, Nokia, argues that a Google Phone will meet with limited success and lose money, because the company lacks the necessary phone industry relationships to reach the massive scale that is needed to compete.
