(SMY:ME) Featured in Industry Journal January 28th, 2000 The DataCapture Report: Universal Interrogator Allows Interoperability for RFID Users On January 6, SAMSys Technologies Inc. announced it had filed for a patent on its new multi-protocol, multi- frequency, RFID reader. It calls the new product an "Interrogator Control Module" (ICM). On January 11, SAMSys announced that the new product had passed verification testing as a Class A Digital Device. ICM complies with the U.S. Agency Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Part 15, Sub Part B, and CISPR22 A. It was also tested for electromagnetic compatibility and immunity, and generic immunity. Hence, it complies with European Standard EN 50082.1 (1997). This means ICM may now be sold (for non-residential use) in both North America and Europe. SAMSys Chairman and CEO Cliff Horwitz told SCAN/DCR, "I believe this is truly a significant event in the SAMSys development of the RFID industry. RFID tags (transponders) incorporate many frequencies and protocols. Many end users are baffled by the technology and don't know which product to select. "In addition," Horwitz continued, "end users worry about compatibility problems. With our new universal interrogator, this concern is a moot issue. Confused end users who postponed buying decisions may now purchase an RFID system with little or no fear of interoperability dilemmas. And this should stir industry growth." SCAN/OCR asked Horwitz if he had received any reactions from other RFID vendors about the recent SAMSys announcements. "The industry seems to support our new product," he replied. "We have spoken with Intermec, Texas Instruments, Amtech, Symbol, and other major players in the AIDC industry. The reaction to our technology has been very positive." "We are not taking sales from them. We are actually boosting their sales by removing the risk associated with purchasing an RFID system. I have been frustrated by slow industry growth, and I'm sure other vendors have been frustrated, as well. If sales of our new interrogator do well, sales of tags will also do well." The ICM is a modular product. This means users can buy modules to facilitate reading any RFID frequencies or protocols. For example, say most of Wal*Mart's suppliers use 13.56 MHz frequency tags to track their products. Wal*Mart would need a 13.56 MHz interrogator to read the tags. If a new Wal*Mart supplierthat used 2.4 GHz tags came on board, Wal*Mart would need a 2.4 GHz reader. With the SAMSys ICM, Wal*Mart could simply purchase a new module and use the same hardware for both systems. The ICM provides a transparent platform for reading multiple RFID-tag technologies. The SAMSys universal interrogators are manufactured by Hamel Davidson Corporation, based in North Carolina. The products can be sold off the shelf, and they are available immediately. "We can adapt our products to any future technologies or standards as they become available," said Horwitz. "Let RFID customers choose the technology that best supports their needs. We'll supply the universal reader." Closing, Horwitz stated, "The industry has been stifled by two key influences - the Y2K distraction and the absence of standards. The former will disappear, by definition, within the next few weeks. But the latter has had a severe choking effect. Nobody is willing to invest significantly in a system, that may become obsolete within a short time frame. "We have removed that obstacle. Simple software downloads will enable users to read any available RFID tag. We look forward to a great year for SAMSys and the total RFID industry. We will finally see the fulfillment of all the promise that RFID has offered for so long." Comment: If this product works as well as Horwitz claims it does, and if it can be purchased for a reasonable price, this will be a giant leap for RFID technology. Most RFID vendors agree that one frequency or protocol would not meet all the needs of the RFID user community. So, multiple technologies are a given. A universal reoder seems to be the answer to the industry's interoperability problems. If sales go up due to the availability of a universal reader, tag prices may come downwhich would further increase industry growth. We view this announcement as a major milestone in the ongoing RFID story. SAMSys appears willing to partner with other RFID vendors that want to use its technology.
