I don't think an Apple will buy it outright. They would have a consortia remove the patent litigation risk. If WiLan gets a $1 / unit licensing rate that can be applied to other handsets manufacturers. There is Billions of legitimate Litigation risk in the handset community, and it is currently priced at 0.
There is also a trove of assets. Then there is the risk that these patents end up in the hands of Chinese Tech. So it would likely be a Private Equity firm or some other patent risk clearing entity.
I also wouldn't put it past Acacia who has strategic relationship with a PE firm. Or a marathon patent group which has gotten rich off of Bitcoin.
This is a dirt cheap asset for any of these high flying tech firms where quarterhill is trading at 3X Enterprise Value (Most of these firms are trading at 15X+).
