Clearwater Capital Management, Inc.

Not sure what their intentions are investing in Sherritt?

Anyone have any ideas?

Doesn't seem to make any sense at this point?
Comment by Albatross on May 25, 2023 1:36pm
Hmm well it wouldn't make sense to you because you see no value in Sherritt or the products it produces so why are you even bothering to ask the question? You don't think the EV revolution will really materialize into much and you think they will find alternative metals for the batteries.  So other than selling at a loss you 'hope' won't materialize, what is the ...more

LOL - Dear Albatross, your attention to detail requires some honing my friend.  I never said there was no value in Sherritt.  My proposition is that as long as the US embargo against Cuba remains in force, Sherritt will have no value.  That's a very disctinct difference.  There is value in their products and Ni will be needed.  Sherritt isn't going to go to any ...more

They are deep value and turnaround investors.  They see an absolutely "cheap" stock with a competent management team creating positive momentum in the business (ie cobalt swap arrangement, debt buybacks, etc).

Thx SD1.  You suggested in your comment that they are "deep value and turnaround investors"  Do you have any historical or current examples of their success or are you surmising this? If thats the case then it may be a positive development.   If thats the case, I hope they have better luck than "A group of activist investors led by investment holding company ...more

I would also be very interested to talk to Clearwater and see what there intentions are in buying over 10% of Sherritt stock. Ive checked them out as much as I could and they seem to be smart investors. I was surprised they were not at the annual meeting and or havent asked for a place on the board. (I wish they would). Im hoping they become more active. Them buying helped support my reasoning for ...more

I believe you worked for Sherritt no? I suggest you call since you have had access to the inner workings of the company? Just a thought.
Comment by Maxmoe on May 25, 2023 8:30pm
They can't be that smart if they oopsied over 10%. And my guess is somebody screwed up and they bought over 10% by mistake. Unless they are on their way to 19.9%, it seems counterproductive and pointless to land barely over 10%. OR ....... cue the dramatic music .....Careful what you wish for here fellow shareholders. Maybe the current team is no better than the last for sucking sherritt dry ...more

I don't trust Clearwater for a NY minute. I rather wish they had never moved into S.

Yup. Kind of guys you double-check you still have your wallet after a meeting.
Comment by Sanguinity on May 27, 2023 6:54pm
I was thinking about this myself, just today.  I'm convinced they're looking for a takeover bid at pennies on the dollar, and a quick buck.  They pony up enough cash thereafter to buy-off anyone who says they have a claim on the original assets.  That gets them the Biden Admin. finagling some kind of exemption from Helms-Burton (hell, the whole embargo is now the longest in ...more

Cuba needs Sherritt and Sherritt needs Cuba. You think if Clearwater ever took control of Sherritt and tried to break it up into pieces that Cuba would go along with that? They have a good little deal going there, currently everyone is getting paid a tidy sum except the shareholders.  I think the board, the executives and Cuba like it that way. Russia and China could easily do what Sherritt ...more

Haha. So true. They got all those old cars there from the 50s. But try to get a paint job for one. If you go to a body shop you are lucky if they have more than one color paint to choose from. Paint is a hot commodity down there as are a lot of other essentials

A new Sherritt entity in Cuba: Sherritt Paints Who's in?

I actually looked into an import export container biz from Halifax to Havana. The plan was to ship tires, headed to our dump , in containers to Cuba. I'd get paid to take the tires from tire shops locally and potentially, if it grew, from further afield. Imagine that. Getting paid $10 a tire to pick them up. Cubans are desperate for used tires. Can't just make them out of scrap like other ...more

Makes it pretty hard to find your car after the baseball game. If ever in Cuba I highly recommend going to a locals baseball game . Very different from a game in Canada or the States. Alot more fun and one thousandth the price.

Ditto for Dominican Republic. You can even see some major leaguers on some teams during "winter leagues". Nothing like shots of mega proof rum on ice while the hawker waits for you so he can re-use the glass.

Rick Mercer did a comedy sketch on this. Sovereignty association with the new province of canuba.  Very funny.
