Analyst Price Targets

Analyst Price TargetsPersonally, I take analyst price targets with a grain of salt. They almost always signficantly overstate their price targets and put either "buy" or "hold" labels on them (rarely "sell").

My theory is they want to keep their personal line of communcation open with the company to obtain up to date info and thus don't want to rock the boat by revealing they are pessimistic about the company or its share price. Of course, if they subsequently realize they are going to be way off the mark with their price targets, there's always the option of issuing a "downgrade" of their target price which, translated, means they made a mistake, but still usually keep the target price significantly higher than the current share price. Happens a lot. Thus my approach to thinking / researching myself and only reading analyst resports to perhaps learn of information I wasn't aware of (and only those I can read for free - certainly wouldn't pay for them).
