This is what I wanted to hear - strength, commitment and confidence: "After careful consideration, the Board has concluded that retaining and optimizing the Company's retail business will generate the highest long-term value for shareholders and therefore, has unanimously decided to retain and continue to optimize the network and expand strategic partnerships for the Petro-Canada retail ...more

Comforting that Suncor has made the decision to retain PetroCan as what it is - a money making asset and not bow down to Elliott.  Elliott now can take their 3% and re-invest in solar or better still stick it where the Sun doesn't shine.

One of my friends who was a senior bureaucrat in the Federal Government called me after reading the news regarding the SU decision concerning PetroCanada.  Back in the day he worked in the Energy Department was a key figure in the privatization of PetroCanada and subsequent events. He couldn't stop laughing during our conversation as he had drafted over the years countless Government PRs ...more

Experienced, good story. The truth is always hidden and that take on it might be fact. Lots of wordsmiths out there. In the meantime, the refining and retail side continues to provide half of Suncor's profits, and as others have pointed out, the crack spreads continue to be strong, so the future is still bright. Looking down the road, as it takes a couple minutes to fill a gas tank vs. 30 ...more

Not to many full service stations left in the GTA may be different elsewhere.  I thought they were independantly owned and could switch names at a drop of a hat.  Used to pump gas at a full serve as a kid.

You may well be right my friend but frankly I have my doubts. Right now the specs for the IONIQ5 that I have on order takes 18 minutes with a Level 3 charger to go from 10-80%.  This approximately the same amount time it currently takes for me to fill up a tank of gas and wait for my wife to go to the ladies room and pick up a coffee.  Over time this speed will improve as well as the ...more

I'm curious as to why it takes longer to charge your smart phone/battery for your drill/headphones than your car... Oh thats right, super fast charging (and the heat generated)  is bad for the battery.  Car makers will actually want the battery to fail just outside of the warranty period, since everyone keeps saying that there is no maintenance on these EV vehicles... So much for ...more

too many naysayers are too focused on petro demand drop from car drivers, and forgot about the planes, trains, and trucks used to mine the mineral needed by EVs.  Even if transition from ICE to EV is complete in say 10-20 years or so, i see a drop of oil demand by ~10% due to EV but during that time, world energy consumption would easily increase by that amount too from other area, and i know ...more

no doubt that's the real story. The optim time to exit retail gas stations was 5+ years ago. IMO sold their gas stations for $5.6 million/station in 2016, Cenovus sold their (Husky) gas station in 2021 for $1.25 million/station. SU likely seeing offer at $1 million or less per station. I'm glad SU didn't blow off their retail chain at fire sale price. That's why i didn't ...more

IMO, stay calm and carry on is the right approach. They still sort of operate like a Crown Corp. I do see them increasing their stakes in Syncrude and Fort Hills over time. They should be reducing debt instead of buybacks though with their FCF.  Not exciting but pretty profitable. By the way, upgrading is the crown jewel.
