CAPP in Calgary: Strange bedfellows at Syncrude

CAPP in Calgary: Strange bedfellows at Syncrude

Marcel Coutu's comments about one of his No. 1 competitor joining the Syncrude oil sands partnership managed to be both vague and accurate at the same time. Canadian Oil Sands will soon share Syncrude with Suncor Energy Inc. after Suncor absorbs Petro-Canada.

The two have been neighboring rivals for decades. Asked what it will be like having Suncor on its team, the chief executive of Canadian Oil Sands replied:

It would be strange bedfellows, to say the least.

There may be more expertise sharing, but the ball is in Suncor's court on that one, he told reporters after presenting at the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers' Oil and Gas Investment Symposium in Calgary on Monday.

Rick George, Suncor's top boss, said he does not want to ditch any of Petro-Canada's oil sands assets.

So, would Canadian Oil Sands rather see Suncor stick to its side of the highway? Coutu wouldn't comment on that one.
