The shares they want to cancel are those retail investors' share. So they simply don't care to pump up the price. You can call it manipulation, but what can you do. We are the small guys.

Now that the share price has dropped, the stock will perform well going forward IMO perhaps as good as but probably not better than its peers IMO.  What I still don't get is this continued prioritization of buybacks in Q2 at the expense of growth, dividends, debt reduction or green energy investments - the vibe one gets is the company is run by stubborn financial engineers.
Comment by Experienced on Sep 05, 2021 2:46pm
Generally agree with you...although they do have a focus on reducing debt as much as they can without incurring bank penalties. As I have said in previous posts, I support what they are doing right now but am looking for a plan and some action in terms of transitioning the company to a renewable energy company.  If they continue with the financial engineering as you put it next year, I will ...more

You want them to not cancel cheap shares and instead spend the money on drilling (growth)?
Comment by Skysohigh on Sep 05, 2021 7:56pm
Finacial engineering? Hardly. Paying down debt is prudent during higher oil prices and buying back stock when it's so cheap is a good use of cash flow IMO. It's not like they're issuing series of preferred shares or spinning off assets into secondary companies they own like what enb was doing years ago. With regards to the renewable energy transitioning they seem to be doing more than ...more

Buybacks represent an invesment in your existing business. Suncor's business model didn't do so well during the pandemic and the long term (30 years ) future of it appears to be in question. So going all in on buybacks seems...but the share price is quite low so perhaps its warranted atm.  Perhaps a businessperson might try to change the business model or diversify instead. Or perhaps ...more

Here's my take..... Suncor management has been using its huge FCF to buy back shares and pay back debt.  They have also been using this cash to engage in activities which will reduce its long term costs to produce oil and some of this activities involves the use of renewable energy and carbon capture to reduce its GHG emmisions. All of these activities are good things and this is why ...more

While I agree with the beginning of your post totally I think you're overcomplicating things. CNQ by comparison has no wind farms or EV charging network and is doing much better. Why? Suncor made the misstep of cutting their dividend last year and losing their dividend aristocrat status. I would estimate that explains a $5-10 discount in its share price. Now the past being the past the best ...more

If Suncor was owned by 1 person, what % of FCF would they spend on share buybacks?
Comment by Oldnagger on Sep 06, 2021 4:04pm
If I were that person, then I would take it all as a dividend, then use the dividends to buy twice as many shares using a margin account. Pretty hard to argue with a company earning 30 % on its share value . Then again the industry is replete with spectacular values. ( of course the marginal tax rate on my dividends would be very high , yet maybe I will be better to  pay the taxes now before ...more

Great post Sky... I don't believe we are far apart in our thinking. In terms of renewables, I have said here that it is a challenge to find investments that can generate decent returns since the prices of these companies and activities is IMO overpriced.  That said, there are opportunities out there but you need to look really hard to find them.  Most of the great opportunities ...more

As to the rake-over of Painted Pony shareholders by CNQ, I would merely like to comment that I am encouraged by the fact that Suncor did not indulge in the same despicable tactics as CNQ. For details go to the painted pony stockhouse BB. A truly tragic tale of greed on the part of CNQ , Pony's president (who left with a golden parachute ) and collusion by the Canadian banks (particularly TD ...more

I used to follow that board actually and as I see it Ward ran that company into the ground over years of mismanagement. The shares were around 60 cents or something like that IIRC by the time CNQ swooped in. I wouldn't judge CNQs tactics as despicable, more like opportunistic. They took out the weakest "prey" in the herd of small cap gas to the benefit of their shareholders with ...more

I realize that my opinion is a minority opinion, but after digging into the details of the takeover offer , ther were many details that were very sketchy at best  ( such as TD writing the fairness opinion (one liner) while they were the major player that led to the rake-over. There is a lot more, I won't rehash all of it , but I mention it as a reminder to shareholders in Canadian stocks ...more

I don't think they've sullied anything, that saga will be quicly put in the past. Again IIRC, td didn't renew their credit line and left them screwed. If Ward hadn't made so many misteps and put the company in dire straits they wouldn't have been taken out like that so easily. I recall a lot of lamenting on that board but honestly the best thing those shareholders could have ...more

Well i bought CR , NVA , BIR PIPE and PEY, but I still miss my PONY. I love assets and they had tonnes of them !!

My final comment for today. I really liked SU CNQ And VET for one major reason , and that was due to the reduced margin requirements that allowed me to leverage up my returns. The IiROC on August 25 added many new listings available for LSERM (list of securities available for reduced margin) in the Sector, which will allow greedy people such as I to get even more leverage from the juniors For ...more

Fair enough, it would have been nice to have it succeed but I try to follow the advice "don't be married to a stock". Sometimes easier said than done. Good luck with the others.
Comment by Skysohigh on Sep 06, 2021 7:58pm
Yes I agree with you 90% except that I think any fund managers that have sold off their SU shares because they're committed to divesting from oil aren't going to get lured back if SU announces some 2050 plan about being 100% renewables or by aggressively advertising their current wind farms or ev charging stations because in the end they're seen as an oil company. Funny enough, some ...more

So you'd prefer a taxable dividend over a non taxable buyback?  And you want them to spend money on drilling instead of said buybacks and distribute cash via taxable dividends?  I'd be dissapointed as an investor if they did that. I beleive management is poor however the one thing they seem to be doing properly is their current asset allocation.  There are a ton of junior ...more

Oil and gas are both in short supply globally. There is a complete lack on the part of almost everyone to respond in the time frame that it takes to get large resource projects built. Renewables will take much longer still . The juniors , particularly those who are drilling full blast will profit handsomely  I am already heavily invested in the juniors and others , but I keep a bit of the ...more

Please don't spread bs here. Suncor is generating a lot of profit just look at the last earnings report. CNQ is as well but profitability and stock performance are not the same thing.
Comment by Thor16 on Sep 07, 2021 7:39pm
Long ago put that Tommy123 guy on ignore.  Most if not all of what he writes is either completely fake or just flat out incorrect.
