The Future

Reporting information....draw your own conclusions

I have been in New Zealand for the past month and returned to Canada yesterday on Air New Zealand.

in New Zealand there is virtually no use if plastics, especially single use.  For example on Air New Zealand our cutlery was recycled wood not plastic.

We were in relatively unpopulated areas on both the North and South Islands and there were places with EV charging stations and there would be no problem getting your TSLA (of which we saw many) charged if you didn't have your own Level 2 charging station.

Also spent some time in Australia- same thing

All if this is quite the opposite from my experience in the US where the use of plastics is if anything excessive.  Seems to a lot will depend on whether the Americans follow the lead of the rest of the developed world

bah my meme did not come through There is lots of plastic waste but whats the carbon foot print of that wooden fork compared to the plastic. cant really stand that wooden fork I get at A and W.  Feels like a giant tooth pick

I also give NZ credit.  There not banning sales of ICE vehicles just offering a incentive to buy the electric.

Merimat Good points I don't know the math concerning the energy to make a plastic fork compared to recycling a wood one but my guess is that it is less since you need petrochemicals to make the plastic fork in the first place and then there would be energy consumption for the recycling. Perhaps there are people here that know this math.

don't need credit, regular gas is 2.31 CAD/liter in NZ
Comment by Experienced on Jan 31, 2023 12:30am
Well sorta... I was paying 2,40-2.60/litre NZ$ which is about 2.15 or so CAD but that was for 91 octane which equates to premium gas here. That said, the higher gas prices does make the math for EVs better.

We must differentiate between the lefty craze that is climate change and common sense approaches to the problem of plastic pollution. NZ seems to be doing some things right

Yep  Common sense doesn't appear to be that common among the political class these days. I also found that being nice and friendly is a common trait in New Zealand compared to most other places in the world that I have visited.  As an example- at the beginning of the trip we were on a cruise and at the first port we were in the Cruise Terminal and I had planned a hike.  I was ...more

Postscript to the previous post.... another time on a hike we missed a turn. This other hiker stopped and asked me if I needed help.  I said I think we are lost and he asked where we were going and took to a key place and gave us directions from there.  Guess in NZ looking like a dork pays off....lo
