Gold, silver, and platinum have been in focus recently after a weak dollar bolstered prices in 2009, and while the U.S. currency has shown recent signs of life, precious metal stocks are roaring to bring in the New Year.
Gold prices hit a three-week high Monday after slumping to a seven-week low in mid-December. As was the story throughout 2009, fluctuations are largely driven by the outlook for the U.S. dollar, which many fear will continue to struggle, as inflation could be a consequence of the massive economic stimulus efforts put forth across the globe.
As a whole, the Gold and Silver Stocks Index is up by 3.5% today as the dollar pulls back to start 2010. The Index is currently trailing the S&P 500 by -3.5% over the last month, but a look at the performance chart shows the segment is near the support of its positive 2009 trend.
Multi-billion dollar mining giants Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX - News), Goldcorp (NYSE: GG - News), and Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM - News) are all ahead by over 2.5% in the rally. All three pulled back substantially in December, giving gold bulls ample opportunity to boost stakes.
Silver players Silvercorp Metals (NYSE: SVM - News), Pan American Silver (NASDAQ: PAAS - News), and Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW - News) are all among the day's top performers, up by over 3% for the session. Silvercorp is now in positive territory over the last month.
