Imperial Oil Sept 22Imperial Oil to pay $200,000 for dumping waste in North Saskatchewan EDMONTON (CP) - Imperial Oil Ltd. must pay a $200,000 penalty for dumping up to 400 litres of industrial wastewater into the North Saskatchewan River, Alberta Environment announced Thursday. The fine was levied after the corporation pleaded guifty to bypassing its water treatment system. The penalty includes a $20,000 fine to be paid to the government, $120,000 to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton, $30,000 to Alberta Ecotnist and $30,000 to River Watch Science. The company estimated the wastewater, which contained hydrocarbons, flowed from its Strath-cona refinery into the river in February 2004. Imperial Oil could have faced higher fines. It originally faced two charges, each carrying a maximum $500,000 penalty.
