RE:RE:RE:RE:The vulnerability of wind powerThe conversion to non fossil fuels will not only be necessary for climate reasons but inevitable for all reasons as one by one economical reserves diminish. First to go will probably be light crudes, then heavy crudes followed by natural gas and finally by coal. I realize that zealous people wish that the transition happened 20 years ago. But it didn't. Too much need and too much greed, So the task that remains is herculean and will be extremely costly. My concern is that the steps proposed have been mostly non effective. Due to the fundamental unreliability of wind and solar their use is restricted to instances where reliability is not crucial. Wind and solar require back up, and that has already been shown , most recently in the UK and Texas. More than back up, however is the need for storage. About the only non fossil fuel storage available is through hydro dams and perhaps very large scale batteries. Hydrogen will be a very expensive means of storage.
So what is my proposal ? well the very first is conservation and energy efficiency. The next would be a build out on a very large scale of  Nuclear power (for which reliability is extremely critical ) the next small but nevertheless significant issue would be the replacement for now of coal by low methane emission natural gas production.
The subject is long and complex. I have been fortunate to have worked in some aspects of it as have others who preceded me and followed me in my own family. I never worked in Wind Power but my son did for 5 years with the leading provider at the time . His job was to meet and assess warranty requirements and he came away less than impressed. He now supervises a very large scale Nat gas powered generating system.So I am merely trying to pass on any wisdom I may have
