Putin like Stalin doesn't give a rats Azz for the guy and gal on the Russian street. He is a megalomaniac although a very very rich one .One of the richest men in the world and his background just a KGB thug , sort of like the Little Corporal.if you get my meaning. .The Russia as Stalin knew it just doesn't exist anymore and like the Little Corporal he is a good poker player, trying to duplicate , The Rhineland , Austria and chechaslovakia convinced the West will fold.Probably an astute bet but in knowway justifies what he is doing.Hard to understand what the Ukraine has to offer that makes both him and Russia the incompetent become pariahs of the world other than another authoritarian regime , but l do enjoy their food.
