03:26 PM EST, 01/06/2023 (MT Newswires) -- The number of oil rigs operating in the US fell by three this week, according to data compiled by energy-services firm Baker Hughes (BKR).

The count declined to 618 through Friday, Baker Hughes said. A year earlier, the US had 481 oil rigs in operation.

Oil and gas rigs in the US decreased by seven to 772. Gas rigs fell by four to 152, while miscellaneous rigs remained unchanged at two, the company's data showed.

In the same period of 2022, there were 107 gas rigs and zero miscellaneous rigs in operation. Overall, there were 588 rigs operating in the US a year ago.

Across North America, oil and gas equipment increased by 98 to 961, up from 729 at the same point last year.

In Canada, the count was up by 105 on a weekly basis at 189, compared with 141 operating during the same period last year. Canada's oil rigs rose by 88 to 113, while gas gained 17 rigs to 76.

Among US states, top producer Texas added two rigs to 378, while Oklahoma lost three rigs. The rig count in California, Louisiana and New Mexico fell by two each.
