Whitecap Resources Inc > WCP is a huge laggard

WCP is a huge laggard

When CPG became at par with WCP I bought traded some CPG stock for WCP. What a huge mistake that was. CPG is now worth 80+ cents more.

What is holding this stock back? Is it because it is huge into Natural Gas and the price of NG is down?

Comment by barneyj44 on Mar 28, 2024 11:10am
My Oil exposure is Whitecap, Crescent Point and Baytex. Wcp for the monthly dividend,  Baytex for capital appreciation and Cpg for a little of both. Wcp has been slow to the races...
Comment by barneyj44 on Mar 28, 2024 11:52am
You may be correct with Whitecap's heavier exposure to Nat Gas. I expect the outlook for NG to improve substantially next year with Kitimat coming online.  Hang tight , meantime collect the dividends and drip them into shares
Comment by PlutusofCrete on Mar 28, 2024 12:18pm
Team - I thought WCP was only 20% exposure to NG? Am I wrong?
Comment by barneyj44 on Mar 28, 2024 12:37pm
Average 2023 production of 156,501 boe/d, including 103,014 bbls/d of light oil and liquids and 320,922 mcf/d of natural gas
Comment by Westcoastenergy on Mar 28, 2024 3:44pm
I own both, though I bought WCP at $0.88 at the depth of Covid.  As a result, I don't pay much attention to what the stock price is doing since I essentially get back my initial investment in dividends annually and I expect it to grow. As for question, CPG just had a big drop after its financing at over $10.  So, this is a bit of a rebound from that substantial dip.  I actually ...more

Yes I bought some CPG when it was around $1.50 durning covid as well. I had a choice of buying CPG @$1.50 or MEG @ $2 however and I chose CPG.  4 years later MEG is at $30 while CPG is still at $11. Goes to show not all Canadian oil company moves up at the same rate.  WCP and CPG has been treking about the same for the past 4 years. If one goes up, another will eventually catch up and ...more

Back in the day Whitecap use to get some .80 cent moves, now we're lucky to get .08 cents....

Chin up Barney.  It's going to be a good day.  Solid company. Solid results. Financials and forecasts for Q1 are just a few weeks away.  We will soon hear more of WCP plans to return capital to shareholders.
Comment by barneyj44 on Apr 01, 2024 9:50am
I'm hanging in Anschultz, I'm a big fan of the monthly dividend payments and the Dividend reinvestment plan.
Comment by tollycraft on Apr 01, 2024 12:31pm
I like the way you think, and do agree with you.  It will be interesting to see if their going to bump the divi or plan on bigger buy backs.  Although I prerfer a dividend increase, bupming up their buy back program will help certainly help share value.  I guess the dividend always is encouraging, it FEELS more like a reward for your investment and is definitly a more tangible ...more

I agree with the sense of a reward that receiving a dividend provides.  What I also like is that I believe it helps keep management accountable to shareholders.  To maintain/increase a dividend, they have to keep their pencils sharp and always keep an eye on the bottom line.  It also serves as a very good positive feedback loop.  By paying shareholders a decent dividend ...more

again lagging CPG today. 90 cent differential now
Comment by baranja on Apr 02, 2024 1:23pm
So frustrating.. look at CPG.. totaly left this behind.. Why?  Why is this lagging?  It doesn't make any sense.
Comment by Anschutz on Apr 02, 2024 1:37pm
I think it's a couple things.  CPG shareprice took a beating with the HH deal.  Many institutions were underwater for participating in the bought deal.  They have incentive to help drive the stock higher.  Secondly CPG has a US listing.  It seems every second talking head on BNN mention how investment is fleeing Canada and how Canada is not a place to invest under the ...more

To Nuttall's point....maybe the market perceives them as liking deals.  Bte, CPG and wcp all have done big deals in the past while. I dumped wcp the day it happened because I was blind sided. I can't trust mgmt. I was expecting what they were communicating and instead it was a hard left turn.  Cpg acquired. I liked the deal but the difference was it wasn't completely out of ...more

WCP stock is moving higher each day. Yes it is lagging CPG.  Personally I'm looking forward to good Q1 results to be released in a few weeks.  Until then I'm waiting for the monthly dividend payday, at which time I will buy more.  Gap up is coming.
Comment by barneyj44 on Apr 03, 2024 10:05pm
A bit of a lagger but paying a very nice monthly dividend that gets dripped....
Comment by jimgeorge on Apr 03, 2024 11:10pm
Johnny, you're too hard on WCP management.  You can't expect a public company to say "hey, we're looking for deals.  Anybody have something they want to sell?"  No, I like management that does a great deal and comments on it later.  I think WCP management is doing it just right.
Comment by Citizen13 on Apr 04, 2024 7:36am
The issue with deals is they usually happen in good times . Its difficult to do them when its a downturn unless you pay all cash .  Dilution = destruction .  No shareholder wants dilution of the shares . I think CPG and WCP should merge as there's certainly a lot of comparison chatter about them . That would make on attractive company and bonus we can stop hearing about the ...more

It wouldn't surprise me to see Whitecap being acquired one of these days instead of being the acquire. Grant has a mittfull of shares many purchased on the open market. If it were to happen it would be in our best interest.
Comment by TheBridge on Apr 04, 2024 10:40am
Usually if there is a possibility or interest in a takeover the share price moves up substantially. If that were the case, what has caused the share price of CPG to move approximately a dollar ahead of WCP in share price? Is CPG entering a position of being acquired? Something is happening here.
Comment by Anschutz on Apr 04, 2024 5:20pm
Nope, I think it's WCP that will be in play.  That Mornig report posted by RetiredCF reads like a veiled hit piece to suppress the share price of WCP.  Look at the language used suggesting they are a serial acquirer and suggestion of share dilution. Something is up and someone is trying to acquire shares at the lowest cost possible.  The quarterly conference call later this ...more

Wishful thinking but a long shot imo.  Theres only a hand full of company's That could do it.  Better chance there doing the buying.  Was not Chervon putting 40k boe of gas on the market?

Pathetic stock! Lagging all week, you'd think one day it will make up some ground. Nope! All CDN oil stocks are up while this thing is down 1%. CPG now $1.40 above WCP.

Very reluctantly, I have to agree!

Definitely been the  wrong horse to ride . I am glad I bet on a couple of other Nags (Cpg and Bte). Still holding a mitfull though as I love dividends...

Likely because of Nat gas . They are giving it away in Texas apparently . Again.  Nat gas is cheaper than the gas that comes out of my rear . And that's free .  It will change one day , but the dummies just never get their act together when it comes to nat gas production .  I guess it's difficult because it comes along with the oil they are drilling for , but still. Why does natural gas always come up as the reason this stock is lagging almost every oil AND GAS company out there.  With the exception of few like brichcliff who took an axe to thier dividend.   Cpg also has significant gas production. Peyto is gas and at 52 week high.  Others are also at or near 52 week high.    Nope.  The problem is likely a perception of poor ...more

PXT (PAREX)  have lot more upside than WCP P/E 4 ,NO DEBT AND  REPURCHASE THEIR SHARES ON THE MARKET.. NICE 6.7 % DIVIDEND......WHAT MORE !!!
Comment by barneyj44 on Apr 04, 2024 10:21pm
'll stick with Whitecap,  better dividend and a more stable Country even with Trudeau. Parex hasn't done much over the past few years either.  Brian Madden likes it though has been a top pick of his forever.

WCP dividend may be great but the spread between it and the CPG share price takes all the shine off the dividend. What is causing this share price spread to widen?

Yes just keep waiting.  Wait 90, wait 100, wait 110, wait,120 wait 130, wait 140 cents laggard wait more..... at least there is a marginally better dividend.  lol

Hehe used to own Meg.  Went back in my records.  Had them at 18.   Then sold for a bit of a loss.  I refuse to own companies that don't pay me to hold there shares.  Win some and lose some......Would I should have held onto my NVA shares at .38 cents.......all 300k of them

Check the 1 year performance Parex down 12.5 %, Whitecap down 2.1%. I hold Wcp for the monthly dividends and safe Canadian jurisdiction.  We've all witnessed what can happen in unstable countries, Panama comes to mind. Congrats though on Parex having a good day. Were do

Congrats to the CPG holders, BUSTED that $12.00.  I don't see why though there should be a $1.00 differance in the share price.  When it comes to equity value, I wish I was all in with WCP, the dividend doesnt mean much to me now.  I'll take the dollar a share more over this divy any day.  WCP better do something in a hurry if they want to  attract new money and ...more

I just sold a little Cpg and added another 500 Wcp. Sooner or later our day will come Tollycraft. Crescent Point has had a great run in part to Eric making it a top pick. Maybe Whitecap should get a U.S listing.  Baytex and Crescent Point volume is way higher down south. Too many cash strapped Canadians paying Carbon taxes to afford playing the stock markets. Lol

Yes, I"m hoping to.  You were certainly right when you said CPG will move up faster than WCP but WCP should hold better on the downswing.  We are sure due.  I hope things change when the first quarter comes out, but as I said before, good financial reports don't necessarily mean a big surge in stock price, however, if there was a significant bump in the dividend I would be ...more

Monday morning, WTI could be up $5 a bbl, it would make very little difference to  the stock price. we need a strong PR team on the road.
Comment by tollycraft on Apr 05, 2024 2:33pm
Can't argue with that.  PR does'nt seem like it exists here, we need something positive to give us a launch. Tolly

Please sell all your WCP and buy Parex if it means you will stop posting here, but before you do, take a look at a three year comparison chart between Parex and WCP and then make your decision

Dear big Jake !!  you're looking somewhat small.... Now I respect your opinion....but you'll never stop my freedom to express my opinion... wcp is underperforming parex ...that's reality otherwise
